I suffer hemiplegic migraine and vertigo are they linked?
I was diagnosed with hemiplegic migraines after many episodes of numbness down the left side, weakness in general and headache. I also et the flashing lights, and often tunnel vision.
I have suffered for almost 9 years, but for the last 3 years i have been suffering servere vertigo. I can't get up when it's happening and have to stay in bed. The worst usually lasts 5 hours and then i'm just unbalanced for a few days until it happens again. I have been told by one doc its an ear problem and another said its migraine linked. I have no idea now which way to go with treatment.
Any ideas?
Also i am on sumitriptan for migraines but been told they can make them worse with hemiplegic is this true?

Hi ckebrown2212
Hemiplegic Migraine is a rare form of Migraine disease and is the only type of Migraine with true motor weakness that resolves itself as one of its symptoms.
When we have a rare form of Migraine disease, the best thing is to see an expert who can acurately diagnose and treat us. This expert would be a Migraine specialist. You see, the Migraine specialist devotes his entire practie to treating patients with Migraine disease and headache disorders. He is on the cutting edge of Migraine treatments and any new diagnostic tools. We have a list of patient recommended specialists you can see HERE.

I suffer also from hemiplegic migraine. First thing MD learn is not to give any sumaptriptan to this type of migraine sufferer due to the risk of stroke.
I am on Verapamil ER, Fioracet, Phenergan suppo and Nubain 20 MG Inj.
It is difficult to treat because it could be a stroke....
You need to find a good neuro who understands this type of migraine ( rare ).
I have an average 3 migraines a week and i cannot speak, walk, lose my memory if i don't pass out.
They put me also on a diet and high dose of vita B2 ( riboflavin ). because of the severity and frequency, i am on disability.
Good luck
Christelle

I have been recently diagnosed with hemiplegic migraine disease. I also have epilepsy so for six years it has gone undiagnosed. I was diagnosed with TIA's becaue of the stroke similarities. My new neuro is not putting me on any additional meds since I am already on anticonvulsants for siezures. I also had a total hysterectomy four years ago and that is when everything went haywire in my brain. My doctor says that I am going through estrogen withdraw that is contributing to this disease. I am unable to go on HRT. Therefore, if you are in your pre or post menapause years, your condition could worsen.. Good luck.
