Please help me cope

I've been suffering from migraines for 14 years. I know my triggers such as red wine, MSG foods, car lights will sometimes do it, weather changing, etc. I've coped with migraines and for a while was taking Depakote daily, was weened off of it, then would just take Imatrex if I ever got a migraine. My migraines consisit of the whole aura side effect that right before I get my migraine, my vision becomes blurred. I associate it to heat rising off a car on a hot day, those squiggly lines. This happens for about 5 mintues, and then one of my hands go numb. Gradually my wrist, elbow, shoulder all become numb. Finally, one side of my face gets numb, including my tongue. After this happens for about 10 minutes, all the numbness goes away and then I get a pierce sharp pain in one of my temples and ultimately, the migraine begins. Sometimes I get sick to my stomach from the pain, depending on how bad the migraine is. After laying in complete darkness with a cold compress for sometimes up to 5-6 hours, I can get up and move around, slowly, still feel the soreness from the migraine. I have dealt with these types of migraines my entire life.

My first pregnancy during the 3rd trimester and after the birth, my migraines were constant and harsh, the doctors told me it was all part of my hormones changing.
I am pregnant again in the second trimester with my second child and I have for 6 days, have gotten 6 migraines. All beginning in the morning when I wake up and lasting throughout the day. One of them lasted 36 hours. The pain, blurriness, numbness did not subside for the entire 36 hours that the migraine attacked. It switched from left to right temple consistantly (something that has never happened before). Usually my migraines only attack one side of my head at a time. And the numbness and blurriness only occurr in the begining of the migraine, not throughout the entire thing. Every morning, so far for 6 days, I have woken in the morning with a migraine and it leaves me crippled for the day. I am at a point of dispair, I cannot go on like this. I cannot take care of my son during the day with a migraine that leaves me weak, temporarily blinded, and in bed all day. I am keeping a close watch on my diet, I have not been eating anything of any sort that is questionable. My gyno perscribed me Fioricet to take for the migraine (which is the least bit effective) and told me there is nothing I can do because it is part of the pregnancy. Is there ANY thing I can be avoiding, doing, I fear going to sleep tonight for having to wake up with migraine tomorrow morning. Thank you.

You are kinda vague...but if I have learned anything it is that consistancy is the key..and for NO alcohol, MSG, or salami EVER!!  Just one time send me into a loop for about 7 days....anyways..good luck and drink lots of water!

Hi Michelle,

I'm sorry to hear about your Migraines now. Do you work with a Migraine specialist or neurologist when you are not expecting? If so, you may want to have your OB and neuro work together to help you with your pain.

If your doctor isn't able to help you, it may well be time to consult a Migraine and headache specialist. It's important to note that neurologists aren't necessarily Migraine and headache specialists. Take a look at the article Migraine and Headache Specialists - What's So Special? If you need help finding a Migraine specialist, check our listing of Patient Recommended Migraine and Headache Specialists.

You can read here about: Fioricet Oral  then if you'd like some additional support, come join our discussion forum. You'll need to register again once there because it's a separate membership database, but you can use the same member name, email address, and password that you used here. You can find our forum at http://forums.healthcentral.com/discussion/migraine/forums.

Let me know if I can be more helpful, ok?

Nancy
