Q: Will doctors write Rxs for injectable narcotics if this is found to only relief for migraine?

I have had migraines since I was 6 years old and been on most triptans and other meds (beta-blockers,SSRIS,Topamax, etc.) I am not a drug seeker. I have two children to take care and want to go back to work. I do not want to have to take a narcotics such as Vicodin or Oxycontin for three or four doses to get rid of a migraine. They make me "loopy" and keep me too drowsy for over a day/night. Usally one shot of Nubain/Phenergan or Demerol/Phenergan works and I only get drowsy/sleep for 4-5 hours. Although my husband is great to step in and take days off to help me and the children, I am weary of missing out on days of my life and my childrens' lives (they are 6 and 10). Presently I do not take any narcotics and wind up in the ER two to three times a month. The doctors and nurses have begin treating me like a drug seeker.  One  or two have told me that I am taking up their time and migraines are not really that bad or emergencies. My insurance will not cover pain management doctors and I have seen countless doctors without sucess. What can I do? Thank you for your time.

Hi Donna,

While it may feel like you have tried every Migraine medication out there, it really isn't possible. There are over 100 medications used for Migraine prevention. I know when my preventives start to fail, I get very discouraged, but realized there is usually a new combination I haven't tried. Migraine Preventive Medications - Too Many Options To Give Up! will give you just an idea of what's out there, and the different combinations.

As far as narcotics go, they really don't solve the problem. They are considered rescue medications, not abortives. Rescue medications are typically used when preventives, then abortives fail or cannot be used. Kind of like our third line of defense. We should all have some kind of rescue medication in our tool box. This article may help: Preventive, Abortive, and Rescue Medications - What's the Difference?

Good luck

Nancy
