Q: If I had stopped taking Topamax at 2 weeks instead of 6 weeks would my side effects have much less?

I was on Topamax for 6 weeks for migraines. During this time, as the dose increased more severe side effects occurred. If I was removed from the medication after 2 weeks at a 50mg dose daily, would the effects have been minimal, as compared to the additional 4 weeks taken with a dose up to 200 mg daily at the 6th week? Side effects were many, severe and lasting after 12 months ceasing the drug. It appears that this drug was a trigger for a hemangioma to begin to grow rapidly on my liver that resulted in surgery, a removal of the benign tumor. I now have lasting GI effects that doctors are trying to reverse with medication. It is not working. Other effects were possible hair loss, weight loss, excessive thirst (I could not drink enough) numbness and tingling, blurred vision, severe constipation ( and eat very healthy), abdominal pain, fatigue, no concentration no clear thoughts or IQ, driving was hazardous, irritable, angry, depression, nausea, no appetite ( I made myself eat daily - very conscious of it), no sex drive... I had begun making funeral arrangements with my family and pastor and the lawyer. I started closing relationships like it was the end. It was so strange.

Hi vdooley3,

What a scary experience to go through, but I'm sorry to say there really is no way to tell because we each react differently to medications. What we do know is that Topamax potential side effects seem to be fewer when a slower taper schedule is used. Many Migraine specialists like to start at 25 mg a day for a week, then go from there. We have more information on Topamax dosing HERE.

I hope that helps. Are you feeling better now?

Nancy
