It's my abortive med (lortab 10)  He prescribes 10 a month and those aren't lasting but 2 1/2 weeks at the most...im not by any means addicted to them, but that is what he and i have found that works when i have to take something to abort the migraine.  We have yet to find a preventative...i do good for a while on one med and i guess my body gets immune to it or something.  Im going in for a nerve block tomorrow and i need to discuss my problem with him...does anyone have any insite on what i should ask or maybe offer my opinion on some other type of abortive to take.  I can not take triptans, maxalt, midrin, nasal spray or anything that will affect my kidneys on the count of kidney problems.  please help.

Are you low on Magnesium(sp)??  Or Iron?  or need more water?  Sounds like the common things, but they too are triggers.  Also have you or can you try taking the pill or something for your hormones?

Chris, You sound like me. I have never heard of what you are taking but an EEG tech had told me her secret to getting rid of migraines once they start. I have suffered from migraines for over 27yrs and this is the only thing that helps. P.S. I also cannot take the nasal sprays. I use FROVA with the onset of a migraine and 2-3 excedrine migraine it really works.  I have also tried it with relpax and it works but only for a while.

Thank you for your response...i spoke with my doc and he's just gonna keep me on lortab.  he changed my preventative and we will see how that works.  And i got my nerve block to, so i think i will be good for a lil while. (maybe)  I ask the doc if he wanted to change my abortive, but he said that we have already tried everything he knows to give me, short of pain meds, so that there tells ya that we have done trial and error. Cant take FROVA or excedrin (the caffeein in excedrin is a trigger)  I do take goody's and advil migraine.  What's the trick your eeg tech shared with you to get rid of migraines?

Hi Chris,

I just want to warn you against medication overuse. I overused my abortive for 3-4 years before I realized the harm I was doing. I was in a horrible rebound pattern to the point where my abortive was actually causing the majority of the headaches I got. I ended up having to completely detox my body of the medication and turned to holistic treatments which helped me greatly. Definitely discuss this problem with your doctor before it continues. Don't accept more prescriptions as an answer (I had prescriptions for two different abortives so that I could switch off between them). That scenario turned out to be a short term solution and a long term battle for me.

I understand about medication overuse and what it does.  I do not exceed 4 per week and i don't take them when there not needed.  Thank you for your response. Smile

My first real experience with chronic head pain...

Ok here's the thing -  Lortab is not an abortive medication - it is a rescue medication.

If you're taking lortab for pain, not to get "high" that's not addiction. It may be dependence, but not addiction. You can read more about the difference in Opioids: Addiction vs. Dependence.

Preventive medication is taken daily to try and reduce the severity and frequency of your Migraine attacks. Anyone who has more than three Migraine attacks a month, ought to think about talking to their doctor about Migraine prevention. Abortives stop the Migrainous process. These include Imitrex, Midrin and other. Rescue medications are pain relievers and NSAIDS taken only when aborts fail or can't be taken(whihc is fairly rare.) This article:    Preventive, Abortive, and Rescue Medications - What's the Disfference? will help explain the difference between the three different medications Migraineurs need in their "toolbox."

If your doctor isn't able to help you, it may well be time to consult a Migraine and headache specialist. It's important to note that neurologists aren't necessarily Migraine and headache specialists. Take a look at the article Migraine and Headache Specialists - What's So Special? If you need help finding a Migraine specialist, check our listing of Patient Recommended Migraine and Headache Specialists.
