Tried it..my hubby told me to get off of it!  It made me loopy, and I couldn't drive.  I take Neurontin, it is better.

My first real experience with chronic head pain...

Hi Chris,

Depakote ER is one of four drugs approved by the FDA for Migraine prevention and used by many Migraineurs. The other three medications are Topamax, Inderal and Blocadren.

Potential side effects will vary from person to person, and in fact, may lessen as our bodies adjust to the theraputic dose. Lots of Migraineurs have good luck with this medication.  In some cases it can take up to three months to see a reduction in our Migraine frequency and severity when we start new medications. If we don't give new medications enough time to work, we aren't being fair to the drug or ourselves.

I hope this helps,

Nancy

Hi Chris,

Yes, those are two of the potential side effects. Remember though, it can take our body three months to adjust to new medication. However, if you cannot tolerate these side effects, don't hesitate to contact your doctor and let him know.

I was on depakote for some months about four years ago and had two noticeable side effects: weight gain and a little sluggishness. The weight gain was annoying, I put about 20 pounds on a 200 pound frame and it didn't seem to respond to exercise.  The sluggishness was pretty minor, as I just didn't seem to have the usual energy (usually in the evenings) and only when I was on my highest doses.

If memory serves, I was on a pretty high dosage, 1500 or 2000 mg.  I believe the dosage is determined by patient weight.

Hi Chris,

I was on this medication for about 6 months with some success, it did make me a little foggy, but my new neurologist took me off it because he said that it isn't a good medication for women to be on because of the risks related to pregnancy & birth defects.
