my friend has had an operation to close her hole in the heart but now she has started getting lots of awful migraines.. and the ones with the aura too. She is being offered beta blockers. Any clues what might have happened?

Was she having Migraines before the closure surgery? How long ago was the surgery? What does her doctor say?
Just to be sure we're on the same page, there's a difference between cause and trigger when we talk about Migraines. Migraine is a genetic neurological disease caused by genetics and overactive neurons in the brain. The disease itself could not be caused by surgery. Triggers are physiological things that bring on or trigger Migraine attacks. Closing the hole in her heart should not be triggering Migraines, BUT it's not uncommon for someone who has Migraine disease to see an increase in their Migraines for a short time following any surgery or other trauma to their body. That's because such events put stress on the body, and that makes them more susceptible to their Migraine triggers.
If your friend hasn't already done so, she needs to report this to her doctors -- both the doctor who treats her for Migraines and her surgeon.
Good luck to your friend,
Teri
