Q: Is there any other effective abortive medication that isn't a Triptan? I am experiencing MOH ...

Hello,

I would like to know which medications I might ask my doctor about for use as an abortive medication that aren't Triptans. I am currently taking Naramig (naratriptan) for use during a migraine attack. The problem is that recently, I just discovered that the cause of my daily migraines is most likely due to the amount of pain medications I was taking each day to relieve migraine pain. All of these medications were Triptans, which I read can happen to lead to medication overuse headaches or "rebound" headaches. I am taking Nocertone (oxétorone) as a preventative and have stopped the other pain medications about 10 days ago. In these ten days, I have had fewer migraines (about one every two days or so) but I've had more attacks (about 5 in the 10 days). During each attack, I take Naramig as an abortive medication, but since it is a triptan, I think it's causing me to have rebound headaches the next day or even 48 hours later. Although it is effective for me, I have noticed that it is losing it's effectiveness as the use is becoming more frequent with each migraine attack. Moreso, I am constantly feeling tightness/soreness is my chest after each use. In your opinion, is my hypothesis correct? If so, are there any medications that might be better for me in treating an attack that is not a Triptan? I would appreciate any suggestions so that I may take them to my doctor at my next visit.

Thank you for your time,

Leila

Leila,

Have you tried Midrin? It is an abortive, and also has a pain med, similar to Tylenol, and another ingredient, that relaxes the body. I can say, this helps me. Of course, I can't take Triptans because of side effects. The Midrin works 60%of the time, and is the "only" help I've found so far. Still searching.

Good luck to you.
