Q: Midrin and my daughters birth defect

I have a 12 year old daughter that was born with Transposition of the great Vessels that was corrected when she was 12 days old and then when she turned 5 the cardioligist found that she had congenital leaky mitrial regurgetation and she has had 3 surgeries for that the third being placement of a stainless steel heart valve.I was very carefull about what I ate , drank or took while I was pregnant . The only thing that I did take was Midrin because I had severe migrains. Birth deffect do not run on either side of her families for at least 4 generations I also have a 22 month daughter that I refused to take anything during my pregnancy with and she is completely healthy. Could  Midrin be the cause of my oldest daughters heart defects? Desperately seeking answers ,Ami

Hi Ami,

Midrin is a Pregnancy category C drug which means there have been no controlled human or animal studies done to see the effects on the fetus. Migraine specialists usually weigh the maternal benefit vs. fetal risk.

I'm not sure how often you took Midrin during your pregnancy. Since there are no concrete studies saying what birth defects would be, I'm not sure if Midrin, or anything you did caused your daughter's health issues. What do the doctor's say?

Good luck

Nancy
