Q: Is there a safe nasal steroid for migraine sufferers?

The women in my family all suffer from migraines and I have had them since I was 16. I am currently taking Elavil daily as a preventative and that helps.

I recently had a very bad sinus infection and ear infection. I was first prescribed a 5 day antibiotic which did nothing, so I was put on a stronger 10 day antibiotic along with a suggestion of using Afrin. I used it for 5 days and voiced my concern about using it longer than 3 days, but the docs told me to keep using it for another 5 days to see if that cleared up my ear infection. I have been on it for almost 2 weeks now and have noticed that my congestion has come back. The doc tried to give me Nasonex, which almost instantly gave me a migraine. I have not used it since and have been using Zyrtec D, a Salt water rinse, and afrin. Are there any nasal steroids out there that are safe for migraine sufferers who also have allergies?

inkedmommy,

A medication that's safe for one of us may not be safe for another. Only your doctor can tell you which of these medications might be safe for you. You and your doctor need to consider any health issues/conditions you may have, and ALL other medications you are taking including prescription medications, over-the-counter medications, dietary supplements, etc.

If you mean are there any nasal steroids that won't trigger a Migraine, that's something that nobody can predict. Unfortunately, the only way to know is to try them.

Welcome again,

Teri
