Q: I've been on Topamax for 4 nights

I've been on Topamax for 4 nights (25mg/day) and I just can't take it...do I really need to wean off of it, or can I just stop taking it since it's only been 4 days?  I can hardly focus or concentrate - not to mention I feel a little unstable mentally.  Thanks.

How much are you taking?

This is something you really do have to ask your doctor. It depends on your dosage, other medications, health issues, etc.

Cognitive side effects aren't uncommon with Topamax, but they do sometimes stop once your body starts getting used to it.

Tough question for a holiday weekend. Any way to reach your doctor?

Thanks for the response, I added the dosage - 25mg/day.  We are in the military, I may try to see if anyone gets messages through the weekend.  Thanks for your help!

You're welcome. Cool

That's a typical starting dosage, and side effects do often stop after a bit. But, only you can decide if they're too severe to wait and see.

What did you do? How are you feeling?

Some doctors will say you can just stop cold at that dosage, but it's really not safe for anyone but your doc to advise you on this.

Please keep us posted?

Hi Teri, yes I called the Air Force Base and no one has returned my call yet.  I just quit taking it, I figured that was better than the way I was feeling.  I'm a nurse too, so I read as much information I could find in my drug guides (Not that those are as good as a Doctors advise!).  I'm hoping to try the medicine again after this semester of college but there is just no way I can have that lack of focus or concentration/irritability...I could hardly take care of myself or my kids + husband!  Just very frustrating because it's been almost 20 years of dealing with these, what's another 6 months or so - right?  :)  Weird thing is, when I'm pregnant - I never have migraines...you would think with today's advancements there would be a remedy to this, that works!  Take care, and thank you again.
