Q: medication is wearing off sooner

Each time I'm on a med for migraines and within a year they seem to become less effective and the headache gets worse more quickly and lasts longer. Right now I'm on Keppra and thought it is/still think it is the best but am nervous that it no longer lasts through the day making it harder to work all day. I know it is a preventative med, is there a med that works well in conjunction with it to help control the migraine.

DTK,

How many times a day do you take your Keppra -- all in one daily dose, or half in each of two doses per day? We can't be sure this is the problem, but if you're taking it just once a day, it's worth discussing your dosing schedule with your doctor. It's also work a review of other medications you've taken for Migraine prevention. Keppra has a relatively short half-life, and the prescribing information says it's to be taken every 12 hours.

As for suggestions of other medications to combine with the Keppra, that's not a question we can readily answer because the answer depends on your complete medical history, other conditions you may have, and all medications you take. You can find a list of possible preventive medications in Migraine preventive medications - too many options to give up!.

Hope this helps!

Teri

SmileThank you. The Keppra is taken 750mg twice a day. I wonder if increasing the dose would help. I have an appt next week and will ask. I'll also ask about Verapamil, since these seem to be hemiplegic migraines. Do migraines evolve over time- e.g. left side/extremities used to be just kindof numb then progressed to that + tingling now add muscle twitching over span of 7 years.?? I think this is a great website and ya'll are wonderful. Thanks.
