Q: what type of migraine is this?

Since June 23rd, 2008 I have been suffering from what seems to be a strange type of migraine. I experience very little pain, and usually I experience just a few symptoms but on bad days I'll experience many. Any ideas what type of migraine this could be?

Regular symptoms:
- slurred speech
- extreme mental fatigue (I feel very "out of it")
- tingling/burning sensation above eyebrows
- sleep paralysis

Occasional symptoms:
- flashing lights
- lightheadedness
- sharp pains behind eyes
- headache

Sleep paralysis seems to be the trigger for the occasional symptoms. Still, even if I go a week without paralysis the regular symptoms persist. I've had a CT scan, an MRI, blood tests, and a thyroid screen, all with normal results. I've also had a polysomnogram to rule out apnea and narcolepsy.  I would appreciate any advice you can give me. Thank you very much.

Jesse,

I've never know of sleep paralysis being a Migraine symptom. Sleep problems, however, are often Migraine triggers. The other symptoms you list could be symptoms of Migraine with aura, but nobody can diagnose via the Internet. You can read more about that in Migraine With Aura - the Basics and Anatomy of a Migraine.

Your question really needs to be answered by a doctor after a comprehensive review of your medical history and an examination. If your doctor isn't able to help you, it may well be time to consult a Migraine and headache specialist. It's important to note that neurologists aren't necessarily Migraine and headache specialists. Take a look at the article Migraine and Headache Specialists - What's So Special? If you need help finding a Migraine specialist, check our listing of Patient Recommended Migraine and Headache Specialists.
