Thursday, August 27, 2009 Mom of migraine daughter asks

Q: Has anyone ever gotten Disability because of migraines?

my 20 yr old is at the point of not being able to hold down a job because of almost constant headaches & when she doesn't have that type; she has the kind that are dizzy, light headed, can't see/walk straight, have to leave work and go to bed&sleep for 3-6 hours; then wake up fine kind.  this is getting worse & worse, almost everyday.  Doctors can't find a medicine that works & she' going to loose her job at FedEx soon.  Any ideas or suggestions.  mom, Janice

I have had disability for migraines. I couldn't hold a job from migraines either. Go to this site http://www.ssa.gov/disability/ or your local social security office to begin the paper work. It is a very long tedious process and not everyone is accepted, but you can always file for appeals and take it to court. The sooner you start the better, especially if you do it before she is 21.

I have heard of people getting it, but it's hard to get for migraines. If you are older, you have a better chance. If you have other illnesse's with migraines it is easier. You will always just about get turned down the first time, then you get an attorney, and it takes 3 years. It's been 2 and 1/2 for me. I'm almost 43, and worked all my life, but had to stop 2 years ago. I still get migrianes almost daily. I found a "specialist" in migraines, and I hope he is the one to help me. No doctors want to say "you can't work". Social security says it doesn't matter if a doctor says that,......but it does. I've heard of people getting it right away, but for migraines, itself, they don't consider a disability. Because you can't see this invisable disease. So, it's hard to say. I live with them daily, and there is no way I could go back to work. If it were not for my husband, I'd have no healthcare, and no way to pay my bills. God was looking out for me. Just keep praying and don't give up hope. You have to stay strong when it comes to migraines, because not a lot of people are supportive. But, this forum its. Hang in there. I hope you get her on the right medicine.

Hi, I'm 24, and just got SSDisability because of migraines.....My migraines had increased from 3-4/month to 4-6/week, very severe.  That increase had caused me to lose my job due to too many sick days.

I didn't have any problem getting approved the first time....though most people say this isn't the case.  I had already been working with my state's agency for assisting people with disabilities to get/keep jobs.  And with a neurologist for 6 months and regular MDs for 18 months before applying.  I think both of these strengthened my position.

The best advice I could give is, Fill out all the paperwork as quickly and completely (and honestly!) as possible.  The assesment paperwork that asks about your ability to do daily tasks tells them a lot about your situation.....just tell them everything.

Good Luck!

Yes, it is possible to get SSDI and SSI due to severe migranes, but it is not necessariliy easy.  You first and foremost must have a lot of support from your doctor(s).  Then you must prove that your migraines make you unable to perform your previous job, or be trained to perform another job.  Prior to applying, your daughter will want to quit her job.  If she has worked 5 of the past 10 years and paid into SS, then she is entitled to SSDI.  Otherwise, she will be eligible for SSI as long as her current assets do not exceed $2000.  In my experience, getting a lawyer is a very good idea.
