Q: Need some answers

I have had migraines for 7 years now. All of a sudden my doctor told me there was nothing more he could do. In July he took me off of all my migraine medicine. I have been in pain since the end of July and when I talk to him he just says that there isn't anything else he can do and then sends me on my way. Just the other day I went in with horrible nausa and pain, he just add two more medicine for nausa. I have tried to get a second opinion but they tell me they can't see me, they are currently taking new patients. I do have an appointment with a headache clinic but that isn't until the end of Jan. so what am I suppose to do until then? How can I get treatment for my migraines?

Hi JJustice,

I'm sorry you are having trouble getting a doctor to help you with a treatment plan.

The best thing is to see a true Migraine/headache specialist rather than a neurologist. A Migraine/headache specialist devotes his entire practice to treating patients with Migraine/headache disorders, attends scientific conferences learning the very latest treatments, and research. Neurologists treat so many different conditions it is hard for them to be experts in any one area. Migraine and Headache Specialists - What's So Special? will tell you exactly what is special about this kind of doctor. When you are done reading that article, you may want to look at our patient recommended specialists directory which you can find HERE.

There are other treatments, like IV infusions that can be performed in doctors offices. We have this information HERE. You may want to discuss this with your doctor to break your current cycle. A study recently released found that Migraineurs with a long history or frequency of Migraines were at an increased risk of silent brain damage. So it is important to reduce the number of attacks we have. Yes, Migraine Can Cause Brain Damage  is an important article every Migrainer should read.

Good luck

Nancy

You need to seek a new physician. When I have attacks the doc has me go in for nurse visit to get a shot. I then sleep for a few hours and wake up with no pain. But mine get so often I go almost twice a month for the shots. Most medications I need to take on a daily basis.
