Q: I'm looking for a place to sleep through a migraine.

I do every thing I can to prevent migraines, but when they occur, no medications ever work to ease the pain, I see a neuroligist at vanderbilt medical center, and over the course of years have lesseded the frequency of the migraines but the pain I have during the migraines not prevented is, after all their efforts, still 50% of what it used to be plus they dont last as long.  But considering how severe mine are I am still completely tortured for hours and I would still rather break my arm in place of every future migraine.  To give me a shot at a normal life,  I require a medical facility put me to sleep for the duration of the headache, or there is no hope.  Is there any facilities that would be willing to do this?  Anywhere is fine I would move to where ever they are.

Hi capitalb,

It is good to hear you are working to reduce your Migraine attacks, but I have to tell you I don't think a hospital or clinic will "put you to sleep" so you can sleep off your Migraine attack.

You may want to consider seeing a Migraine specialist, who is the expert in Migraine disease and headache disorders. I'm sure your neurologist is a fine doctor, but isn't able to be an expert in one area because he treats so many different conditions like MS, stroke, epilepsey - what you need know is the expert who treats one disease - ours - Migraines and headache disorders.

If your doctor isn't able to help you, it may well be time to consult a Migraine and headache specialist. It's important to note that neurologists aren't necessarily Migraine and headache specialists. Take a look at the article Migraine and Headache Specialists - What's So Special? If you need help finding a Migraine specialist, check our listing of Patient Recommended Migraine and Headache Specialists.

Please don't lose hope, you don't need to live this way, there is help. Finding the right doctor is imperative for the correct diagnosis and treatment plan.

Good luck

Nancy

capitalb,

I'm sorry for your pain, but I don't know of any facility where you can go to have them "put you to sleep" and let you stay there until your Migraine is over. Have you asked your Vanderbilt neurologist this question? Have you asked your doctor to give you medications that will help you sleep through a Migraine at home?

Part of what our doctors should do for us is help us find the treatments that will get us through our Migraine attacks. If your doctor can't or won't do that, I'd suggest a second opinion from another one. Is your Vanderbilt neurologist a Migraine specialist? As Nancy explained, neurologists aren't necessarily Migraine specialists.

Another question would be if you've tried the Migraine abortive medications that actually work to stop the Migrainous process in the brain, thus stopping the pain and other symptoms. You may already know about these medications, but just in case, I'll give you the information.

There are triptan and ergotamine abortive medications. There are seven medications in the triptan family-- Imitrex, Maxalt, Zomig, Amerge, Relpax, Axert, and Frova -- as well as Treximet, which is a combination of Imitrex and Naproxen Sodium. Each of the triptans binds to different combinations of serotonin receptors, which is why our bodies may respond differently to each of them. It's well worth discussing the ones you haven't tried with your doctor.

The ergotamines include Migranal Nasal Spray or DHE subcutaneous injections that you can give yourself at home.

Please keep us posted on how you're doing?

Welcome again,

Teri
