What preventative medication is safe for a 50 kg 12 year old bipolar child on lithium to take?
Cynthia,
There are entire books written on the topic of treating children for Migraine. So, I hope you can see that this is not a simple question. It's also not a question that can be safely ansered by anyone other than a doctor who can review his and the family's medical history, discuss his symptoms with you, and conduct a complete examination.
Which preventive medications are dependent not just on the lithium you mentioned the the preventive medication under consideration, but also all medications and supplements your son takes -- prescription or over-the-counter, and all health issues he may be dealing with.
The medications we see most frequently prescribed as preventives for children are propranolol and periactin, but only your son's doctor can tell you if either of them or any other medications are safe for him.
Good luck,
Teri

Hi Terri,
Thank you for your response. With regards to propranolol and periactin, are they safe for use with lithium carbonate?
