Can a person take two types of migraine medication? I am getting throbing pain on the left side of my head. I have always got my migraines on the right only. One medication that I have is not to be taken for a regular tension headache and the other says it can be taken for both kinds.

I would definitely ask your doctor to be safe because some medications can be taken together but some can't. They would be able to tell you for sure!

Thank you Erica,

I will ask my doctor (you know) just to be sure. My doctor prescription for migraines. But I think I will do some more research on tippens and other migraine medications.

Dutchess -

What are the two medications?  We have some information on the site here that I can point you to that might help, if you give me some more information.

There are many medications that can be used in combination, and some that can't.  You might want to look at Preventive, Abortive and Rescue Medications which will give you some guidance about some of the medication choices you might have.

I also want to mention that a throbbing pain on the left sounds like Migraine, even if you have always gotten your Migraines on the right, the pattern can change over time.  It is worth mentioning to your doctor, though.

Megan, I am taking Ralpax and Midrin. My doctor has said it was fine to take Midrin when I have taken my max of my Ralpax. I read about both and still have questions about Midrin. What does it do for me and my migraines? I do see my doctor on Tuesday. I will mention it to them. Thank you. Dutchess

I have had migraines long before there was any medication for them. I now take Elavil to help keep the Migraines away. But when I have a Migaine I still take Imitrx also. I have had a pretty good response with Elavil helping to reduce my migraines. Check with your Dr. to seee if your a canidate in using a preventaative medication along with your usual medication.

As far as preventative meds, I used some but I have had some bad side effects all ready to a few. I am in hopes that my doctor can find one that will work. Maybe I'll get a list of preventative meds here and see what my doctor says. Thanks!

My doctor has given me Amitrip-CDP and Propranolol to take daily and Naproxen or Imitrex only as needed for migraines. I sometimes get dizzy with no headaches, but I am still advised by my doctor to take Midrin because according to her, I might be having a migraine without feeling it. Her treatment seems to be helping me.
