Q: MRI

Six years ago MRI showed 2 lesions and small vessel damage.  How is that important to the headaches and sleep apnea? Could this MRI result be a sign of something else then migraines?  My gut has always told me that.  I also have hypertensive retinopathy.  Just feel like the blood vessel issue causes the headaches but why do I wake up with them?

Hi Ouch,

You're right on target about your head!!  Many time when we wake up with head pain it could be due to interrupted sleeping patterns. It may be a good idea to discuss a sleep study with your doctor. If your doctor won't listen, find one who will!!

I don't know about the lesions. what did the doctor say? Have you been diagnosed with Migraine disease? That would be the first step, getting a accurate diagnosis.

For purposes of treatment, learning about your Migraines, being able to get care if you're away from home, etc., you need a full diagnosis of what type of Migraine you have. You can read more about this in The Type of Migraine Does Matter.

And if I am not mistaken, hypertensive retinopathy may have headache as one of its symptoms.

Transformed Migraine Related To Sleep Problems is a good article to read too.

I hope this helps some,

Nancy

Thanks for your response.  Unfortunately, my doctors are vague and treat me as though i am over reacting.  I just remember there being lesions in the frontal lobe, cerebral peduncle and small vessel damage due to ischemic injury?  The headaches or migraines are always, always on the left side.  Never on the right for years and years now.  That is what made me go to the doctor was sharp pains on the left side.  Sure enough, all the damage and lesions were on the left.  They just hand me pills.  Now I wake up with them and since then found out about the hypertensive retinopathy and sleep apnea.  I have a cpap machine to use at night.  I am just so frustrated because i feel like something could really be wrong and i could have a stroke or something.  They do run in the family along with epilepsy.  I appreciate you responding....you would think with the MRI, sleep study and symptoms that they would want to know whats going on and want me to have relief.  I guess, once I have a stroke or something then they'll cover all of that :)

Go to a different doctor ASAP.  The national Headache Foundation website gave me the name of my neurologist and he is wonderful.
