Q: Sandomigran (Pizotifen)

I am currently taking one Sandomigran (Pizotifen) each night, it used to make me quite drowsey. However, I am now getting migraines every day. I have only been on the medication for about three weeks. I have a doctors appointment but that is still two weeks away. I was wondering if there was anything I should be asking my doctor specific for. Is there any other medications that I might be advisable to take. The first medication I was given was Endep 10, it was working really well except that I was gaining weight. Is there something similar to the Endep 10 that I can take? I realise I cant specifically narrow down which component that was causing me to gain weight.

Hi May!

Sandomigran is one of many medications used to help prevent Migraine attacks. It's not available in the U.S., and is one of the medications used less frequently. Right now, there are over 100 Medications currently being used to prevent Migraine See: Migraine Preventive Medications: Too Many to Give Up! As with other medications, it IS possible that it could be making your Migraines worse rather than better. Definitely discuss this issue with your doctor.

Endep is a tricyclic antidepressant (amitriptyline), and unfortunately weight gain is a potential side effect of that class of medication. Dr. Krusz, our Ask the Clinician, calls tricyclics "primitive" and no longer prescribes them. You might want to discuss EffexorXR with your doctor. It's an SNRI, an antidepressant that works on both serotonin and norepinephrine and has been effective as a Migraine preventive.

Being that you state you've only been on the Sandomigran for three weeks, it may be too soon to tell if it is working for you Migraine prevention. Typically, it can take up to three months to see if a medication is working or not.

Are you currently using anything to treat a Migraine attack, such as an abortive? See Preventive, Abortve, and Rescue Medications: What's the Difference? It may also be helpful to keep a Migraine and Headache Diary, to help you better track your Migraines. This is a very beneficial tool when talking with your doctor.

Hi,

I am currently on Sandomigran, and it works pretty well for me. Definatly takes the edge of and keeps me going.

As far as I know Endep is a anti-depressant? I was undiagnosed for about 10 years and was constantly told I had 'emotional' problems, hence many anti-depressants were tried. Endep was one I tried but it just plain knocked me out. I was a walking Zombie!

Currently I am taking Cipramil (antidepressant),which I have been on for yonks - and is has always helped just a little. Once I was finally diagnosed they put me on Sandomigran and within 2 weeks I was a new person. So it instantly worked really well for me.

Each night I take, Cipramil, Sandomigran, Vitamin B12, Magnesium, and Iron. This combination works really well for me. Although it has taken 10 years to get to this point.

Keep plodding along and keep speaking to your Doctors. If one med isn't working for you there are many more to try.

I am currently taking one tablet a night and will be for a week .Then I am to increase t two tablets a night if during the first week I experience a migraine.But after the first tablet I woke in the morning feeling a migraine coming on as I am extremely sensative to light and my eyes are painful prior to a full blown migraine so I took a tablet in the morning and this stopped the migraine in it's track.Last night I took the one tablet and woke up fine.I recall when I was younger that I found the preventative medication worked best for me ,so I am keeping a record and will add to this site on a regular basis.I have been very severe with my migraines at least 4 a week and I have found that if I can get to sleep I will get relief but I can't get to sleep if pain is severe.Panodol forte does not help so I hope this continues to work.In the past I have suffered for 10 years and then they stopped after I had my 4th child for 7 years but then they resumed again and this is my pattern .The migraines completely go away and years down the track they resume again.As to why I don't know .I hope you are feeling better and my experience helps.

I currently take 2 Sandomigran (Pizotifen) tabs each morning along with two glasses of warm water. I started with one and did have a bad headache and teh doctor advised that I then take two. I now find it so good to be relieved from my headaches which I used to get so often atleast 2 to 3 days a week. However I have also, on the doctor's advice, stopped my daily coffee. I used to have just one cup a day. So I suggest that if you are a coffee drinker stop your coffee for a month and see how you go. also drink lots of water at least 8 glasses a day. You will surely find an improvemnet. Also ensure you have at least 7 hrs sleep. I used to have late nights (movies) and go to bed at 12am getting up at 7am. I have since changed my sleep pattern and have found my headaches gone. Hope you get better and Godbless.
