Q: My 14 y/o daughter has suffered long and painful migraines lasting a week to 10 days at a time for the past 3 years.

She is now on Sandimigran which has helped, but after 3 trips to hospital for the drip, and several neuro consults later we are really none the wiser as to helping her. The term Status Migrainous has never been mentioned to us, yet she has all the classic symptoms. Is this diagnosis a difficult one?? No-one seems to really take that much interest in her condition, and trips to hospital are very traumatic for her, yet these attacks are ruining our lives. After a day and night on the drip she is improved, but not totally out of pain. Where is our next avenue of help? We are in Adelaide in Australia.

Hi Mel,

Your poor daughter, I am so sorry she is suffering so much. We don't have a Migraine specialist listed for Australia, but I can direct you to a site that may be able to help you, because it is time to see a REAL Migraine specialist, not just a neurologist. Check this site.

A single Migraine that lasts 72 hours or longer with less than a solid four-hour pain-free period, while awake, is termed status Migrainous. You should see your doctor or go to the emergency room if a Migraine lasts that long. See Status Migrainous - The Basics for more information.

Let us know how your daughter is holding up.

Good luck

Nancy
