bcmartha,
A family history of cardiovascular disease is indeed one of the issues that doctors consider before prescribing medications such as Imitrex. Some doctors will not prescribe triptans for anyone with that kind of family history. Others may prescribe them if you have no other risk factors and/or if a cardiac workup shows your cardiovascular system to be healthy.
This is definitely an issue to discuss fully with your doctor.

Hi Bcmartha,
I suffer from atrial fibrillation and can not take imitrex, maxalt or any other kind of triptans, as these drugs work by narrowing the blood vessels. If you are healthy and do not have any kind of history of heart disease your Dr. may possibly try you on it to see if it works. Usually the first time they will do so while you're in their office so you're in a medical surrounding (in case side effects do occur.) Get with your Dr. or neurologist and see what he says. I know a lot of people that have had really good results with it and others that haven't. Everyone is different and of course all medicines work differently on each individual.

Good luck!
