Q: extended use of indocin effects in later life

My brother was given Indocine when it was just a test drug.  He was about 11 yrs old and took it for about 5 years he is now 52.  He eventually became dellusional, psychotic and had memory loss did a ton of bizzare stuff and eventually had trouble with the law.  This drug has effected his whole life since then.  He has suffered from migraines for some time now and has begun to have memory loss again.  Are these symtems of prolonged use of Indocine?

Erin,

I did some searching and can find no evidence that what you describe would have been from Indocin. The most common problem of Indocin is that it can be very irritating to the stomach.

From your question, your brother took Indocin from the age of 11 to the age of 16. Correct? You don't say when he developed the other problems.

Migraine disease itself can cause memory problems. It looks as if the best course of action at this point is for him to see a family doctor for a good comprehensive check up, a psychiatrist for evalutation of the delusional and psychotic issues, and a good Migraine specialist for his Migraines. It could also be beneficial for these doctors to consult with each other. If he needs help locating a Migraine specialist, check our listing of Patient Recommended Migraine and Headache Specialists.

Good luck,

Teri

Erin,

I'm so sorry your brotherand your family is having this experience.

I take Indomethacin and have had some issues, but nothing like you describe. Troubling was severe bruising and weakened blood vessels.  My worst was Eosinophilia- too many eosinophils (part of your immune system) which can damage your body over time.  Lucky for me, I was finally able to get my Neurologist to test me for vitamin deficiencies I had suspected for years.  With the correction of many of those issues, especally B12, I found a lot of relief from my health issues and was able to nearly stop the extremely high dose of Indocin.  My Eosinophils immediately fell back to normal.

I still use Indomethacin occasionally, but not like before.

Has he had a medical workup lately?  It seems at least prudent with all his symptoms.

Doctors do not routinely check vitamin levels, but if you do an online search for (an example) B vitamins, in particular B12, you'll see researched correlation between deficiencies in this simple vitamin and mild to severe brain disorders ranging from Schizophrenia and dementia to symptoms of Multiple Sclerosis.

Good luck and my thoughts and prayers are with your family and your brother.  I know it must be so very hard.  Hang in there...
