Use of Namenda and Migraine types
Teri,
Thanks for the links.
I do have the MTHFR C677T and a second gene A...... on the same chromosome that are the cause of the hyperhomocysteinemia. My hematologist has me on the Folgard RX for that. There is a long family history of headaches migraine-type and strokes. I recently spoke to an aunt who indicated she never had a migraine but used to have cluster headaches. She seemed surprised when I told her they were related and who else in the family had them.
All of my docs have used terms Complex and Complicated interchangeably. I have had stroke-like symptoms... aphasia, left-sded weakness, neuralgia and visual disturbance, most recently loss of words & memory and complete debility with an almost daily headache now since April. Recently had a neuropsych completed and dx'd with the MCI.
I found the articles both on the Namenda and gene interesting. My neuro did not seem to think it would help with the headaches. I have noticed a brief period of relief shortly after taking the Namenda, but it does not last very long yet. I am still on the trial pack. So far I am not experiencing any negative side effects.
Chris,
It would be best to have a diagnosis that fits within the standards. I can't diagnose you, of course, but I can tell you that the only form of Migraine that causes true motor weakness (as opposed to tingling or numbness) is hemiplegic Migraine. You can read more about it in Hemiplegic Migraine - The Basics. This can be important since there are some Migraine medications that are not to be used for hemiplegic Migraine.
It doesn't surprise me that your neuro didn't know Namenda is being used for Migraine. Neurologists aren't necessarily Migraine specialists. They treat so many things that it's virtually impossible to keep up on research for all of them.
If you and your neuro don't make progress treating your Migraines, you may want to consider seeing a Migraine specialist. Take a look at the article Migraine and Headache Specialists - What's So Special? Good luck,
Teri
