Q: Are amitriptyline and zonegran ever taken together?

My new headache specialist wanted to try me on zonegran and have me taper off amitriptyline.  But as I got off the amitriptyline, the headache got worse...like raw nerve endings or something...hard to describe.  So, I asked to be put back on it...Still have a headache, but was wondering if the two medications can be taken together and if that might be an option to talk to him about?

Thank you!

klgm,

When checking drug interactions for amitriptyline and Zonegran I vind that caution is advised when combining the two. The combination may alter seizure control, increase risk of central nervous system depression, casue psychomotor impairment, and have some other negative effects.

That's just basic information. The question of whether it should or should not be done is something you'd have to discuss with your doctor.

One thing to keep in mind is that it can take up to three months to see if the Zonegran is going to pick up where the amitriptyline was with helping your Migraines.

Good luck!

Welcome again,

Teri

Thanks, Teri.  That's all I need -- central nervous system depression and other impairments!! lol (like I'm not already impaired!)

I have a call into the doc's office so we'll see what he says.  Just trying to see how to ease off one and into the other...to then see if it works! Ughh. Trial and error!

Thanks again

Just in case anyone else has this question in the future, my headache specialist did approve combining these two medications.  I've done extremely well in the past few weeks...No terrible side effects from the zonagran and almost no headaches for the past 26 days!  wooo hooo!  I hope this helps someone else!
