Q: Chronic Migraineur found occasional relief with Axert

I have had a blanket diagnosis for my condition without specifics; Chronic Migraines. I've been suffering a couple of decades with; facial paralysis, hand numbness, confusion, slurred speech, audio, visual and auditory disturbances. I was spending 2 of 4 weeks bedridden from symptoms triggered from barometric pressure or sleep deprivation. All that to say, I've just begun a trial on a medication called Axert and it isn't a cure, but, it has been a blessing since it's quickened the recuperation time.

Migraining Mama,

I'm glad the Axert is helping. It's always nice to find something that works.

That said, I would encourage you to get a more definitive diagnosis as to what type of Migraines you have. You mentioned facial paralysis. True paralysis occurs only with hemiplegic Migraine. You can read more about hemiplegic Migraine in Hemiplegic Migraine - The Basics. One reason you need to find out is that triptans such as Axert must be used with care, if at all, if you have hemiplegic Migraines.

One other thing you should know about Axert is that it shouldn't be used more than two or three days a week.

If we take Migraine abortive meds such as triptans or any kind of pain med more than two days a week, they can compound the problem by causing medication overuse headache (MOH), aka rebound. See Medication Overuse Headache - When the Remedy Backfires for more information on this.

Welcome again,

Thank you!

I've been having the greatest of difficulty getting a doctor in my area and just begun seeing a Nurse Practioner. I mentioned to her before about my facial paralysis and how I'd read about concerns with Triptans. However, this visit (I was migraine free and coherent) I was able to bring to her that the 'Migraine Expert', in my 'Migraine Support Group' had cautioned me on the combination of Hemiplegic symptoms and Triptans. I asked her if she would please set my mind at rest. Immediately she went to her resources as I sat and waited and read for herself the cautions in regards to the combination. She ceased prescribing possibly inappropriate medication and is investigating past the initial 'blanket diagnosis'

Thank you, sincerely, for being my support.

You're very welcome -- always.

It can be hard to find a doctor close to home who specializes in Migraines, but it can be worth it. For four years, I drove eight hours to Philadephia to see a specialist. It took two days and a night in a hotel for one visit, but I'd do it all over again. Seeing that specialist was a real turning point in getting my Migraines under control.

Keep me posted?

Teri
