This is definitely a question for your doctor. IM Dilaudid, or more likely, the generic hydromorphone, may be a possibility for a rescue medication to be taken if your regular medications fail.

Hi Plead8:

It might be important for your MD to figure out WHY the Dilaudid IV and MS are making you itch.  If you have an allergy or sensitivity to it, it might not be the drug of choice for you.  If you got it in the ER, maybe your regular headache physician should consult with the ER physician to better understand the itching.

Are you allergic to latex?  Sometimes the latex gloves worn by nurses and MD can cause skin reactions.  Are you allergic to lidocaine?  Sometimes the "caines" used to numb skin before injections can cause itching if you are allergic to them (like me).

To answer your question, I googled Dilaudid and found a product circular that suggests it can be given IM, but I dont know if the absorption characteristics given IM are ideal for migraines.  This might be a question to pose to Teri Robert ("ask the expert").

I hope you find something that works, that you can tolerate and does not make you itch.

Hi Jeff--sorry, I totally misunderstood.  I have only taken Dilaudid via IV.  Maybe others will see your posting that have experienced other dose methods.  Good luck!

Dalaudid does not make me itch.  I have received it IM and not IV.  A 4mg dose with 50mg of promethazine did work.  Morphine sulfate and Demerol make me itch.  I know that Dalaudid comes in an oral form and rectually.  Has anyone taken it successfully it IM or rectually and got good results?

Hi,I have recieved Dalaudid IV, orally, and IM. I prefer IM over IV because I am clausterphobic and hate IV's.

IM works wonders 5-10 min or less!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Orally: I take 4mg, the only problem is, is that due to your intestinal tract you are not actually recieving 4mg, its cutting it down to 2mg. I also take Vistaril for my nausea orally love it, love it!!!! I do not like having vistaril given IM because for some reason it makes me itch.

I can not take other anti-emetics because they do the opposite of what they were intended for.

I used to get Dauladid IM all the time for my migraines.. Absolutely love it!!!!!!!!!! It is the only thing that truly helps with the pain!!! IV MS & Demerol make me itch also. We figured out the problem with me. It was because of the anti-emetic that they were giving me also and not the actual pain medicine.

Currently I am taking 1-2 4mg tabs of Dauladid and 100mg of Vistaril for my migraines. It doesn't work as well or as fast as IM but its better than suffering horribly!

I have not tried it rectally yet.
