Q: I am a 20 year old female who has suffered from chronic headaches and migraines since I was 16.

I am a 20 year old female. I have been suffering from migraines since I was 16. Some of the other symptoms I have include but are not limited to these: Abdominal pain, nausea, hair loss, pain in the ear and jaw, extreme fatuige, lack of appettite, occasional memory loss, dizzyness and sensitivity to smells and light. I have been to see 2 different nerologists a pain specialist and numerous other doctors and they have all come up empty handed.   I have tried all the different migraine meds and none of them work. And pain meds don't work either. I have a 3 month old and it is very difficult to take care of him when I get migraines a couple of times a week that incapasitate me! I am never pain free, I always have a headache and some of those symptoms. I am desperate for some answers because I not only want to be pain free I want to be able to enjoy my beautiful son!

Thank you

K.G.,

-:¦:-•:*'""*:•.-:¦:-•*Welcome to MyMigraineConnection!*•-:¦:-•:*'""*:•.-:¦:-

The best advice I can give you is to get yourself to a Migraine and headache specialist. It's important to note that neurologists and pain managment specialists aren't necessarily Migraine and headache specialists. Take a look at the article Migraine and Headache Specialists - What's So Special? If you need help finding a Migraine specialist, check our listing of Patient Recommended Migraine and Headache Specialists.

Remember two things:

1) You're NOT alone, and

2) there IS hope.

Remember that you've not yet been to a Migraine and headache specialist, so there are bound to be treatments you haven't tried yet.

When we have three or more Migraines or headaches a month, we need to be talking with our doctors about prevention, and please trust me when I tell you that you couldn't possibly have tried everything for prevention yet. There are now over 100 medications and supplements that can be used for Migraine and headache prevention. The frustration of trying to find what works for us can make it seem as if we've tried it all, but with so many possible preventives, it's literally impossible to have tried them all. See Migraine preventive medications - too many options to give up! for more information.

I can absolutely empathize with you. At one point, I was in bed all day an average of five days a week with debilitating Migraines. I finally got angry enough to take charge of my health care and went to a Migraine specialist. Now, I often go two to three MONTHS between Migraines. If you want to read more about my own battle against Migraine disease, take a look at Excerpt 2 - "Living Well With Migraine Disease and Headaches".

If you'd like to talk with other Migraineurs and get some additional information and support, come join our discussion forum. You'll need to register again once there because it's a separate membership database, but you can use the same member name, email address, and password that you used here. You can find our forum at http://forums.healthcentral.com/discussion/migraine/forums.

Please keep me posted?

Welcome again,

Teri

please look at my post from tonight, I am 46, but my life was just like yours at 20 and I missed a lot of things w/my kids. I have just had a successful procedure and want to get the word out to anyone it could help. I too had done the gamut from meds to holistic, thousands of dollars and years lost to debilitating h/a's "faking" it through life. After many complex procedures , I was just about to go to John Hopkins and My pain Dr. was reminded of one more procedure: old and simple, one he had forgotten about:spenopalatine ganglion block, google it, see what your doctor thinks , it is easy, and some people even do at at home, narcotic free. After 2 years of daily 24 hr severe migraines, I am 10 days pain free. I feel like I have my life back. Be glad to answer any questions, not sure how long relief will last, it is just one day at a time ,but easy to repeat I am told. Don't give up. I hope this will help and prevent you 20 more years of pain

you 're welcome, it has to be done by a pain specialist-anesthesiologist. But it was very simple, haven't seen the bill yet , but other procedures were done under fluoroscopy and were more complex and failures. I been a nurse for 25 yrs, this really was easy, I promise. Google it , there was a good article out of Taiwan that explained it.  www.pain-manage.org.tw/s-pain/s-pain05.htm. I was telling my Mom about you today, I really hope this helps . Keep in touch. Today is day 10 pain free for me. Hang in there! I would print this out and take article with me or fax to your doctor.

Actually, it doesn't have to be an anesthesiologist or pain specialist. Many Migraine specialists are well qualified to do these blocks and do them.
