Q: My Neuro has put me on Ebixa (Namenda) as a preventative.

Previously I was on Propranolol for many years and then Topamax for many years, but neither works anymore.

Upon researching Ebixa, I see that it has 89 possible side effects!!! I am a little apprehensive about taking it, but at this point I'll try anything. Since June of 2010 I have had a 40 day migraine that responded to nothing, until the 40th day when DHE IV worked. Then I had a 70 day migraine for which nothing worked and during which they found I had a (probably genetic) frontal lobe aneurysm, which I had clipped in February of 2011. When I woke up after the surgery I was praying the migraine would be gone, but no such luck. It lasted another 8 days and then simply went away!!! I am currently on the third week of another intractable migraine, and started the new medication last night. Has anyone had experience with this drug? does it work well??

Hi Lana,

Namenda is used for Migraine prevention and many people do well with it. However, I'm a little concerned about the length of your current Migraine and at this point stopping this headache or Migraine that you've had for six months needs to be a priority. When oral medications have failed, IV infusions will often break the cycle. For more information about this, see IV Treatment of Refractory Migraines.

Your current cycle needs to be broken for any medication to really work...

Keep us posted,

Nancy
