Patti,

Bless your heart. Of course, you're scared. I would be too. Let me make some comments here on what you've said...

No family history of Migraine? If you can, see if there's a history of "sick headaches" or sinus headaches. My great grandmother called her Migraines "sick headaches." Lots of people used to call them that. And, 90% of what people think are sinus headaches are really Migraines. You can read about that in Sinuses Giving You a Headache? It's Probably a Migraine.

Yes, Migraines can cause lesions that show on MRI. So far, there's no evidence that those lesions themselves cause any symptoms, but they're seen as an indication that Migraine may be a progressive disease, and that we need to take good care of ourselves. See Is Migraine a Progressive Brain Disease?

Migraines can cause pressure or pain around the eyes due to inflammation of the trigeminal nerve and its placement. It's easy to see on this illustration, Pathways of Migraine.

On the Imitrex - it shouldn't be used more than two or three days a week because it can cause headaches called medication overuse headaches. You can find information on that in Medication Overuse Headache: When the Remedy Backfires.

OK. Now, about frequency and preventive meds. Preventive meds should work to reduce both the frequence and severity of Migraines. Depakote is only one our of more than 100 medications that can be used for Migraine prevention. Your doctor should be willing to discuss the options with you and choose one WITH you, not FOR you. If you'd like a list of medications used for prevention, you can find it in Migraine preventive medications: too many options to give up!

If your doctor isn't able to help you, it may well be time to consult a Migraine and headache specialist. It's important to note that neurologists aren't necessarily Migraine and headache specialists. Take a look at the article Migraine and Headache Specialists - What's So Special? If you need help finding a Migraine specialist, check our listing of Patient Recommended Migraine and Headache Specialists.

I hope this information helps, Patti.

Please keep me posted?
