How can I get my insurance company to pay for Botox injections for migraines?

I have been suffering from migraines since I was 12 years old. Since December, I have had migraines that have lasted weeks at a time. The first was 7 weeks, then 3 weeks, then 3 1/2 weeks and so on. No medication has helped to either break the cycle, or keep the migraines away. I have tried just about every medication out there. Both to prevent migraines, and to stop them when they start. The doctor has suggested Botox injections but my insurance has refused to pay for it. It is extremely expensive. Any suggestions as to how I can get Blue Cross and Blue Shield to agree to pay for them? They say it is a non-covered diagnosis.

Hello,

Sadly, this is a fairly typical problem. Have you tried having your doctor write them a letter listing all the other preventive treatments that have failed for you?

What was the reason BC/BS gave you for not covering it. Sometimes, the reason they give is that it's not FDA approved for Migraine prevention. If that was their reason, take a look at Migraine, Medications, and Insurance Companies. There's information there on what has worked for some people.

Please keep us posted?

Teri
