Q: Migraine question

I am wondering about the "warning" I get prior to the start of a migraine. I have an emotional roller coaster that goes from laughing, crying and anger and then the start of a migraine within minutes. My face sometimes feels as if it is numb with some pins and needles. I get these headaches usually once a month but moving up to twice a month. What is going on?

Hi Lilly!

The "warning" you may be experiencing is called prodrome. Feeling differently before a Migraine hits could be a great indicator, once you know what you are looking for. It's the same thing with aura, the second phase of a Migraine attack. Seeing flashes of light, visual disturbances, smelling things that are not there....among may other symptoms.

Anatomy of a Migraine  explain the phases of a Migraine and what happens during a Migraine Attack.

You mentioned your Migraines are increasing. Are you currently on any preventive medication? If not, now would be a great time to discuss your options with your doctor. There are currently over 100 medications used for Migraine prevention. We have the list right here: Migraine Preventive Medications: Too Many to Give Up!   Another good idea is to keep a Migraine and headache diary. We have three versions for download available HERE. A Migraine diary is a very useful tool when tracking your Migraines, and also when dealing with your doctor and figuring out your Migraine triggers. Migraine Triggers are different for everyone, but we have a list of common Migraine triggers; HERE.

If you are in need of a doctor to help you with your Migraines, please check out our list: Patient Recommended Migraine and Headache Specialists and also, Migraine and Headache Specialists: What's So Special?

Good Luck!
