Hi sammy,
Since you've already worked in a pain clinic, you know what methadone does to a body. I've been on methadone, and I know what it did to my body. Yes, it took the pain away, but it also took away the better part of 3.5 years......fuction, I guess I did. Would I do it again, probably under the same circumstances.
Now, having said that, what I know today, and the options that are available, I wouldn't say starting methadone would be my first choice. It only masks Migraine pain, and at some point, your body adjusts to it and doses need to be adjusted upward.
Migraine prevention, trigger indentification and management are a better way to go in my opinion. Finding a good Migraine specialist, not just a neurologist who says they are a headache specialist, is a good first step. See here's the thing - neurologists are fine doctors, but aren't experts in one area because they treat so many different conditions like MS, stroke and epilepsy. A Migraine specialist is just that. An expert who treats one disease - ours - Migraines and headaches.
If your doctor isn't able to help you, it may well be time to consult a Migraine and headache specialist. It's important to note that neurologists aren't necessarily Migraine and headache specialists. Take a look at the article Migraine and Headache Specialists - What's So Special? If you need help finding a Migraine specialist, check our listing of Patient Recommended Migraine and Headache Specialists.
I hope that helps,
Nancy
