Q: Is there a doctor out there that even cares, much less believes in migraines that will actually help with the pain when you've tried EVERYTHING?

I am a 38 year old SEVERE daily Migraine sufferer & wanted to respond to your answer that "with so many possible preventatives, it's literally impossible to have tried them all." As a medical professional, I'm familiar with all the classes of drugs listed on your Migraine preventative list, as well as the herbal drugs. I HAVE tried all of these medications & in so many combinations, as well. I'm still left 95% incompacitated at this time and migraines are getting worse as I get older it seems. I've never had less than 4 a week. The Triptans only work part of the time & are expensive for a 50/50 shot at working. Occipital Nerve blocks & Magnesium Infusions, as well as other procedures have been useless. Botox is helpful for my neck & shoulders only. I have a small chlid and cannot lose my job to this horrible disease. I suffer from other ailments, such as hypertension - that becomes uncontrollable with the pain. I've passed out from the pain. Trying to find a doctor is next to impossible. I've even been to a Headache Clinic, who classified me as their worst case ever, overdosed me on medicines & left a fear of ever returning to one. Do I believe there is an underlying problem? YES! Can anyone find it? No. So, because my pain is not "provable" by x-ray or blood tests, I'm just a "seeker." Terrible because even the ER hates headache sufferers, almost as much as we hate going due to their lack of care, terrible treatment & belief. I'm well versed in the rebound headache cycles, OTC drugs, triggers, diet, etc. Each day I awake to or am woken by a massive migraine or cluster headache. My daughter sees a sick Mom, who struggles with life & I wonder when does the pain end & life begin? I've been positive my entire life about my prognosis, but with things getting worse & MRIs/CTs being normal, I'm exhausted & losing ground. I will say that some of the narcotics have relieved my migraines/clusters but, again, with no "proveable" medical tests to the physician, I'm just a seeker. Sad part is, I do not take medicine unless I'm hurting worse than a 5 on a 1-10 pain scale & have NEVER abused medications. I HATE the term seeker, especially since I never ask for any drug in particular - just ask the doctor to make the pain bearable....I'm ok with a daily pain score of a 4 & don't expect total relief.

Hey there,

I can "hear" the frustration in your voice. There are many of us who are in a similar situations. It just plain stinks.

I do have to say that there are caring doctors, true Migraine specialists, who really want to see their patients get better. I met many of them in early June at the 53rd Annual Scientific Meeting. And it is good to hear you say better, not cured! But the thing is there are only 290 US doctors UCNS board certified in headache medicine! Neurologists are fine doctor, but as you can see most are not "true" Migraine/headache specialists. They may say they are, but that just isn't the case. Migraine specialists treat one condition - ours -  Migraine and headache disorders. Neurologists treat so many different conditions like MS, epilpesy and stroke it is hard for them to be experts in one area. Keep reading for information on: Migraine and Headache Specialists - What's So Special?  Then you can take a look for a  Migraine specialist on our patient recommended list. Most Migraineurs do have normal CT's, X-Rays, MRI's and the like - which is a good thing. There is no diagnositc tool available for Migraine now. So getting an accurate diagnosis from a Migraine specialist when a case is complicated is crucial.

You mentioned trying all the various medications. But here's the thing - it can take up to three months before we see a reduction in our Migraine frequency and severity. I know that is a long time, but we'll never know if the medication works if we don't give it a fair trial. Do you by chance take anything every day to relieve pain? We can unwittingly cause another problem called medicaton overuse headache. Taking Migraine abortive meds such as the triptans or ergotamines or any kind of pain medication -- prescription or over-the-counter -- more than two or three days a week can make matters worse by causing medication overuse headache (MOH), aka rebound. See Medication Overuse Headache - When the Remedy Backfires for more information on this.
