Q: TMJ Treatment for migraine

Hello from Canada. I have exhausted my search for relief. I now take 2 shots of DHE in my thigh almost daily! I changed Dentists and my new Dentist is one of the 3% in Canada that specializes with TMJ with regard to migraine. He said and he touched wood that he has 100% success rate to date . He has been helping with TMJ for 3.5 years now. The total cost for the MRI of head right down to the nitty gritty in my mouth and then the appliance you were 24/7 is 5 Grand. Dentist explained that the jaw is connected to C1 and C2 in the neck. That seems to be where my first pain occurs daily. Ouch that is a lot but has anyone seen this kind of specialist for migraine and most importantly did it work? Sincerely, Jodie

Hi shade,

I understand about TMJ, I have it too. I am however, a little leary of any doctor who says they have a 100% success rate - I don't think that is possible. That's a lot of money - maybe there is time for another opinion?

I know I say this all the time, but it really is true. Have you by chance seen a Migraine specialist? And I mean not a neurologist who says they are Migraine specialists - but a true Migraine specialist who treats Migraines and headaches all day, every day. You see there is a difference. Neurologists may be fine doctors, but have a hard time being experts in one area. This is because they treat so many conditions like MS, epilepsy and stroke. A Migraine specialist is just that, an expert who treats one condition - ours - Migraines and headache disorders. When you get a chance, take a look at article Migraine and Headache Specialists - What's So Special? If you need help finding a Migraine specialist, check our listing of Patient Recommended Migraine and Headache Specialists.

Here is a wonderful illustration of the placement of the trigeminal nerve. Many When people wonder why their eyes, sinus area, jaw, or teeth hurt during a Migraine, this will tell you; Pathways of  a Migraine.

Neck pain is a common Migraine symtpom, when you get a chance take a look at this information, Neck Pain as a Migraine Symptom  and  Research Presentation Confirms Migraine and Neck Pain.

I hope this helps,

Nancy

Thank you so much for your helpful information Nancy.

Did you go ahead with treatment as you said you have it as well?

Did it have any effect if you did go ahead with it? I am in Canada and I was told we have no Migraine specialist by Nurologist, I called the clinics on your fab web site and I would have to rob a bank to be able to pay the min. amounts required to even start the process. Told it would be upward of 50,000 us. Nurologist by the way totaly changed who I was I lost my job as I was on 12 meds 2 times a day. Only If I could go back in time and just say no to his treatments. My life was bad before, bit he really changed me with his MS tratment ( i do not have MS), drugs etc. I have even lost my entire family over my behaviours, anger, unable to unstand or hold my tounge. What a mess, that is why I am willing to go into debt for the possible solution? Thank you,

Sincerely,

Jodie

HI shade,

No I didn't have the dental treatment, it was just too much money for not enough return.

There ARE Migraine specialists in Canada, in fact here are three board certified doctors in headache medicine - your neurologist is wrong about this:

CANADA
Calgary - Arnolda G. Eloff, MD 403-944-2826 18+
Toronto - Christine L. Lay, MD 416-323-6136 10+
Kelowna - Jeffrey R. Donat, MD 778-436-9770 2+

I would check with one of these before I did something so expensive, but that's just me!

Hi Nancy, Jeff Donat is the nurologist who destroyed my life. He told me he was a nurologist?

He attends many conferences, but he loves to get you on min 12 pills a day. If you say no, he throws you out of his office in tears. He threw me out once and his wife actually called to say how sorry she was. She is his receptionist! He said and I quote " I don't know what you are up to, but untill I fiqure this out I will not treat you!" He was so mean. he ended up giveing me 2 bottle of lydocanine because he thought the first had expireded because it had zero affect. Up untill then it had been working, I did it every week for 3 mths. So I took about 50 shots to the head and was bleeding and Dr said "don't you have a hat or something, I can not send you out looking like this, what will the other paitents think". I had swollen up so bad and was dripping blood down my face. No thanks. I have no idea how the other two are, this man has totaly left me freaked out! I do thank you for your help and may look at the others.

Sincerely,

Jodie

Hi shade,

All I know about Dr. Donat is that he is board certified in headache medicine. I'm sorry you had so a bad experience. Check into the other docs I gave you, maybe you will have better luck
