Q: how long do you see one doctor before looking for another they may be able to help better

My 15 year old daughter was about 5 when she started getting migraines. She started seeing a neurologist two years ago, but is still getting attackes that last for weeks and months.  I don't know what to do. We are'nt well off and live in Montana. How do I know when to see another specialist? Where do I find one that will work with us and her state sponsered insurance? Her current doctor has run all the tests and been great but my daughter is still not better.

Hi Ruth,

After two years, your daughter should see an improvment in her Migraines, meaning, at least a reduction in frequency if not severity. Neurologists are usually not experts in any one area because they treat so many different conditions like MS, stroke, epilepsy and Parkinsons. They may say they are "headache specialist" but that really isn't the case. A "true" Migraine/headache specialist is an expert in one area only -  Migraines and headache disorders. They attend extra courses, scientific conferences and are on the cutting edge of new treatments. Our article will fill you in on more details: Migraine and Headache Specialists - What's So Special?

After you read that article you may want to look for a "true" Migraine specialist. We have one listed in Billings, MO. I see you mentioned finances are an issue, and I think everyone understands that. A call to the specialists office explaining things may help, or discussing a payment plan if they don't take your insurance may be something to think about. Bottom line, as you know, is getting your daughter feeling better. The way to do that is with a Migraine specialist, and the sooner the better.

We also have a discussion forum that you may want to check out. You may find the interaction on the forum to be quite helpful and want to talk with other parents whose children have Migraines. I hope to see you there. To get to the forum, just look for the orange box marked "Manage" and click on the Migraine Forums link.
