Q: Has anyone ever been to Cleveland Clinic and had outpatient treatment for migraines?

There is a specialist in Cleveland, well there are many. The one that I saw took me off about 5 medicines and put me on another, and wants to try me going to outpatient for my migrianes. There's 4-6 hours for 4 days of IV fusions, the next week, you are visited by Psychiatrist, and doctors and RN's. There's group therapy, and I just don't know about this because, I feel if I just work with what they tell me, and my regular doctor, and neurologists, and Psychiatrist here where I live, it will work just as well. It's almost 4 hours to get there, and I would have to pay for hotel and food. Which I don't have the money or means to do right now.

Anyone been to this Clinic or done this process?

Denise,

I've not been to the Cleveland Clinic, but I'm familiar with their program. However, I hope you don't mind my commenting on the thought of getting informtion from them, then handling things with your doctors at home.

Bottom line is that it just doesn't work that way. They've put together a team who has developed a multi-part outatient program that fits different elements of treatment together somewhat like puzzle pieces. Each piece is designed to work with each other piece. Unlike your doctors, psychiatrist, and RNs at home, each member of their team is specially trained and exceptionally well experienced in the treatment of Migraine disease. If it were as simple as telling patients what to work on with their doctors at home, that's what they'd do.

I'm sorry, Denise. I spent many years without insurance and know how difficult it can be to pay for needed medical care. I also know what it's like to have to travel to get care.

Good luck,

Teri

Denise,

I've done outpatient treatment at the CC, and it was one of the most valuable things I've ever done about my migraines. The care they offer is nothing at all like what most of us could find at home working with our regular doctors. They know more. The doctors and other staff are all on the same wave lenght in treatment.

I got a loan to be able to afford my stay. Worth it. Very much worth it.

Dear Denise,

If your docs at home could help, wouldn't they have done it by now? You want to trust them to do right by you after YOU tell THEM what to do for you? If that worked, why would anyplace still have those outpatient programs? They wouldn't because nobody would go.

I would give anything if it was only 4 hours to get from my home to that clinic. The ones closest to me it takes either flying or driving for 2 days to get there and they're all out of the network for my insurance so they won't pay, I pay.

Arabella said she took out a loan. I didn't do that, but I did some other things so I could scrape the money together to get to a real migraine doc. Took me a thermos of coffee to work instead of going to the coffee shop. Cut our tv cable back to bare bones. Took my lunch to work instead of doing fast food. Stopped going to movies and rented the DVD instead. Went to the library instead of buying paperbacks. Stopped going out to eat on weekends. You may not have things you can cut to save up for a migraine doc, but maybe you do. All I know was I was so sick I was willing to sacrifice to see a good doc. I'm sure you are too.

Just my 2 cents,

Miles

Denise,

Not sure where  you live but there is also a Migraine clinic in Ann Arbor, MI, went there myself and they were great.  Though Im still suffering from migraines, my migraines did get better after I saw them.  Just found out after doing some reading that B2 supplements and magnesium may also help in relieving migraines.  Many people are suffering from low magnesium levels and don't know it.  It's worth a try for me as I have tried everything else.

Good luck!
