Q: My 13 year old son is having heat and stress related migraines as well as other issues

My 13 year old experiences migrains in extreme heat and when he is very physically active despite the fact he is hydrated.  The migrains, nausea, and tunnel vision last for hours and then he is fine and ready to get back out there.  This has been very difficult for a kid to explain and handle.  When he was little he would suffer from high fevers (106 at times) frequently with really no other symtoms.  He seems to have outgrown this.He  has recently started having reflux issues that result in his vommiting.  We have visited with our doctor about all of these symtoms and he tells us that he might be hypoglycemic, but that was just a guess.  No testing was done.

As for the reflux he prescribed a medication for it but the pharmacist said tums would do the same thing and are a lot cheaper.

As for the migraines we've been told not to make a big deal about it because it could hold him back from being able to do things when he is older if that is in his med records.

He was also born with cataracts.  I don't think this has anything to to do with it but thought it should be mentioned.   We aren't certain how to help him deal with all of this and if any of things could be related and possibily be hiding a bigger issue.

Stacey,

No, I wouldn't "make a big deal" about his Migraines either, but I WOULD get him treatment for them. Migraine is a genetic neurological disease. I don't know why anyone would tell you that having it in his medical records would hold him back from doing things.

Migraine disease needs to be treated, just as much as diabetes or any other disease would be treated if he had it.

If his doctor isn't able to help, it may well be time to consult a Migraine and headache specialist. It's important to note that neurologists aren't necessarily Migraine and headache specialists. Take a look at the article Migraine and Headache Specialists - What's So Special? If you need help finding a Migraine specialist, check our listing of Patient Recommended Migraine and Headache Specialists.
