Q: are small twitches in your face normal after stopping an anti convulsant?

I recently tried topamax, lamictal and trileptal all for two weeks (each one for two weeks-not together) so after my six weeks of hell-- I have a twitch in my cheek that my dr says could not be caused by these meds due to the low dosage and the length of time I was on them--I am in great health and have never had these before these meds. I took them for a mild mood disorder and now I am terified I may have this tic forever. has anyone experienced this and I notice if I drink coffee it makes it act up a bit... sound dumb, but if you have had this--does it go away? I could kick myself for taking these meds--

learnedmylesson,

Although I've not heard of this happening before, it is possible.

Am I understanding that you tried each of these medications for two weeks, taking one for two weeks, then the next and the next? Did your doctor tell you that it can take up to three months to try just ONE long enough to see if it's going to work for you?

How long has it been since you stopped taking the last of these medications? If it's been longer than two weeks, you might want to get a second opinion.

Please keep me posted?

Welcome again,

Teri

Teri-Hello-- in answer to your question- I was on lamictal for 2 weeks and developed a rash- then had to stop it. After a week of nothing, i went on topamax for about 13 days. I experienced a rash and major hair loss.  After two weeks of nothing, I was put on trileptal and the same thing happened--hair loss and a slight rash so he took me off it all together.  After three days of being off trileptal the facial twitch started.  It is on the right side on my cheek.  It feels very deep in my face, but you can see it when it moves--it happens when I smile and after I drink coffee.  When I told my psychiatrist--he said he's never heard of medication causing this in such a short period of time.  I don't know what else it could be---it never happened before and he wants me to get a complete neurological work up???  I see loads of dollar signs in that and am wondering why that would be necessary....
