Low pressure system going on for over a week, so is headache, how much imitrex is too much?
A low pressure system has been in the area for over a week now and unfortunately, so has my migraine. It seems to ebb and flow and I have been taking imitrex daily, sometimes more than once a day, just to function. I really can't afford to take time off of work though I did have to leave early one day because it was just too much. I'm worried that too much imitrex might have consequences, or just as bad, that it may begin to lose it's effectiveness, which would be awful since it's taken me years to find something that actually makes my headaches managable. I just hope this low pressure system is going to move off soon! That's one of the few triggers that I have absolutely NO control over.
I have been suffering for the past 6 days now as well. Its awful - extactly the same way - comes and goes and gets severe sometimes. I've taken Treximet 4 times now in the past 6 days. Just saw the doctor - he gave me a shot of Toradol. It helped for about 3-4 hours. He definitly recommended that I try not to take the medication (pretty much the same as imitrex) that often. It should only be used like 1-2 times per week, at the most. He gave me a prescription for steroids to start tomorrow and he said that has helped with acute migraines. Depending on where you live you might not get relief for more days. I live in Eastern PA and its supposed to rain for the next 5 days. I'm hoping the steroids help when I start them tomorrow....

Calla,
Of course you don't want to go over the recommended maximum daily dose. In addition, the use of Imitrex should be limited to no more than two or three days a week in order to avoide medication overuse headache. You can read more about this in Medication Overuse Headache: When the Remedy Backfires.
Sounds like time to talk with your doctor about preventives and alternatives to triptans when you have more than two or three days of Migraine in a week.
Good luck,
Teri

I've had the same experience, even though I've been on multiple preventatives and taken Imitrex at the same time. Whenever this happens, I have to take a shot of something like Indorol to break the cycle (an anti-inflammatory drug).
After you've had a headache for such a long time, you become overly sensitive and you need something to help take that away.
