Is Anyone using the Zofran (Ondesetron) Patch?

Is there anyone whose migraines cause severe nausea/vomitting/diareah for whom oral and suppository anti-nausea drugs are not working, who has tried the Zofran patch?  If so, what doses have been effective, and has it completely eliminated your nausea/vomitting/diareah?  Did you have any side effects?

My migraines (hormonal, 12-15 days per month, this month 18 days so far!) sometimes result in sudden severe nausea with unremitting vomitting and diareah, which prohibits the absorption of oral anti-nausea meds and suppositories (they are all expelled if I start throwing up or having diahreah within 90 minutes of administration).  I end up in the ER (like last week) from severe dehydration, in need of IV fluids, pain medication, and IV antinausea drugs in very high doses.  After these episodes, I remain nauseated for about 8-10 days, and have chewed on candied ginger all day long to help ease the nausea.

My physician has just ordered the Zofran patch (7 days each patch, used for cancer chemotherapy patients who experience nausea/vomitting).  She wants me to wear them beginning the first sign of pending menses (a migraine!), and through the first 14 days of the cycle.

The prescription is not in yet, but I am wondering if anyone has tried it and if it has been successful.  It might permit some of us to take narcotics that otherwise make us severely ill (again, the orals and suppositories do not work for me even when taken before the narcotics).  And I am hoping it will also permit me to take (and keep down) preventative medications for another type of nocturnal headache (hypnic) that often get expelled, which result in a migraine headache PLUS hypnic, with all the gastrointestinal crap to boot.

Hi cking,

I wish I could help you here, but this is one thing I haven't tried yet! Have you been over to the forum and asked there? It may reach some more people.

You can find our forum at http://forums.healthcentral.com/discussion/migraine/forums.

Hopefully, others will be along to share their experiences with you.

Take care,

Nancy

Hi Nancy:

Thanks so much for recommending the forum!  I have not used it to post a question yet, and you are right, now is the time! I will post tomorrow AM.  I hope you are doing well and that you have "smooth sailing" this week.

Hugs,
