Q: My migraines always occur when I wake up; they never develop during the day.

I suspect it is menopausal related and related to hot flashes at night.  Have tried different pillows thinking I was sleeping funny.  All headache & hot flash symptoms disappeared for the past 3 months, now I have a feeling they are returning.  Had massive migraine with vomiting yesterday.  Never had headache issues in my life until this past year.

Hi Kate,

Anyone who has three or more Migraines a month needs to be talking with their doctor about prevention, along with an accurate diagnosis. If your doctor isn't able to help you, it may well be time to consult a Migraine and headache specialist. It's important to note that neurologists aren't necessarily Migraine and headache specialists. Take a look at the article Migraine and Headache Specialists - What's So Special? If you need help finding a Migraine specialist, check our listing of Patient Recommended Migraine and Headache Specialists.

For some people changes in sleeping patterns can trigger a Migraine attack. Poor quality of sleep, not enough sleep, too much sleep, and so on. We have a video on just this issue you may want to take a look at:  Video: Migraines and Sleep.

Let me know if this helps,

Nancy

Hi!  Have you ever been tested for a sleep disorder?  Do you snore?  I have sleep apnea.  I often have morning migraines and the docs chalk it up to the sleep apnea.  Hope you find some answers and some relief!
