Monday, May 12, 2008 CatStomps asks

Q: What do you wish you knew then, about seeking treatment?

Example: My first bad headache I remember I was 5. But two times, once 20 years ago, and once recently, the pain was so bad, it was a change in conciuosness, like a different plane, where I was unable to move or reach out. After years with a doctor I trust, we have new insurance: Kaiser, and Maxalt has stopped working for me. When I told described THAT kind of pain to my new kaiser doctor that she recommended a psychiatrist.

Lesson: Use their lingo:  Just call it pain Level 10

Does anybody have suggestions on how to avoid the pitfalls of the HMO Survivor Challenge?

Hi CatStomps,

Is there another doctor in Kaiser you could see, because clearly this doctor does not have a clue about Migraine disease. Or you could suggest another triptan, there are six others you could try: Imitrex, Amerge, Zomig, Frova, Relpax and Axert. I had given up on triptans after three didn't work. Then when I was in a bind, I tried Axert, and I was pleasantly surprised -  It worked. Now I have Axert in my toolbox.

In my opinion, 10 on the pain scale needs to be used when you have the absolute WORST pain you have ever experienced in your life. If we use 10 for every Migraine attack, sometimes the medical profession (not the entire profession) looks at us a bit skeptically. I wrote a SharePost about this: Worst Migraine Ever?

That the Neuro that I was being sent to actually knew about migraines, mine had never had a headache of any kind!
