This is a question you need to discuss very carefully with your doctors. The doctor who treats you for Migraines and your OB/GYN need to consult about what meds you should take while trying to get pregnant and while your are pregnant.

Here's some information from the Topamax prescribing information:

"There are no studies using TOPAMAX® in pregnant women. TOPAMAX® should be used during pregnancy only if the potential benefit outweighs the potential risk to the fetus. In post-marketing experience, cases of hypospadias have been reported in male infants exposed in utero to topiramate, with or without other anticonvulsants; however, a causal relationship with topiramate has not been established."

"What Should I Do If I Get Pregnant While Taking TOPAMAX?
It is not clear if there is a risk to the fetus/baby if you are exposed to TOPAMAX and you are pregnant. Various abnormalities have been described in the offspring of animals exposed to TOPAMAX during pregnancy. If you use TOPAMAX while you are pregnant, ask your healthcare professional about reporting your experience to the North American Drug Pregnancy Registry at Massachusetts General Hospital (Boston, MA). This registry collects information about the babies born to women who are taking drugs to treat various conditions. Information about the North American Drug Pregnancy Registry can be found at http://www.massgeneral.org/aed/. You can also join the registry by calling 1-877-376-3872."

Good luck,

Teri

While researching the medication I learned that if you take 200 mg or more your birth control is no longer an effective method of contraceptive. I never let my doctor put me on more than 150 mg because that made me very wary of the medication.

That is a dificult question to answer...I was on Topamax (400mg a day) before, during and after my pregnancy...And my daughter is now 4 years old.  We have never had any problems with her health at all until this past week when they found small amounts of blood in her urine which may be a bladder infection...me being worried because I was on Topamax while pregnant, I started searching on here to see if anyone has had similar problems....I would rather worry and be wrong than not worry and be shocked with bad news!!! So I guess we will see what the ultra sound shows tomorrow!!  Back to your question...if you do happen to get pregnant and stay on topamax...I hope you have the same type of doctors I did...I had an ultra sound at least once a month...sometimes once a week..depending on the stage of pregnancy to make sure my daughter was developing correctly...I had one doctor visit a week with my regular ob/gyn a visit every couple of weeks with primary doctor and a visit once a month with my neurologoist.  I wish you the best of luck!!!!

I am a 35 year old woman currently taking 500mg of topamax and was always told not to ever consider having a baby while on this med.  I am scared to death of what my life would  be without topamax and have just recently decided that I really want to have a baby.  My situation is very complicated. I have been very ill for a long time and my time is definitely running out I have gotten off all of my other meds and swithched to holistic pain meds and have been doing rather well.  My sister has considered being a surrogate but her husband has his doubts. You give me reason to believe I may actually be able to have this baby on my own! Tell me how is your daughter today???You have given me hope thanks

My daughter will be 6 years old in just under two weeks...we had her bladder and kidneys checked out and everything was fine! She is in perfect health. I understand being scared of life without Topamax, I was in the same situation. I was on topamax for about 3 years when my husband and I decided to have another baby. I stopped taking topamax when we were trying to get pregnant, and stayed off of it for most of the first trimester. I was put back on the topamax about a week before my second trimester. The doctors thought the risk of me being off topamax was greater than the risk of being on it while pregnant. Like I said before, I had doctors appointments and ultra sounds ALL the time to monitor my daughters development. My migraines did get worse while I was pregnant. I have basilar migraines, that among other things cause me to pass out. I was in the hospital a lot because of it...the doctors were afraid of how me passing out would affect the pregnancy. I was induced a month early because of how bad my migraines became and how frequently I was passing out. My daughter was a healthy 7 pounds 2 oz and was released from the hospital the same time I was (3 days after delivery). Like I said before, she is about to be 6 years old and has developed perfectly! In fact she is above average height and they are talking about her skipping a grade in school. I hope this has helped...if you have any questions I would be happy to answer them. I wish the best of luck to you!

I was on topamax for 2 years almost for migraines w vertigo. I just weaned off as my husband and I would like to have another child. I was told by my neuro that the Topamax can cause decreased flolic acid which about 2 months ago I started taking in a prenatal. I wish I had known about the decrease sooner and I would have been taking it longer. When you stopped taking topamax how long did you wait to start trying to get pregnant? my neuro told me to wait 4-6 weeks but my ob told me 3 mo's bec it's a class C drug. Also, were you on folic acid while taking the topamax?
