Q: I read Melatonin can prevent migraines--is that taking it during the day or as I do anyway at night?

Newsletter from Headache Foundation lists Melatonin as a preventage for migraines, but it didn't say if its just what I take at night anyway (3 mg).  Or are they talking about taking some during the day, and if it is during the day wouldn't that make someone too sleepy at the wrong time?

Hi!

Yes, taking Melatonin at night is what they are speaking of. I would imagine we would be too sleepy taking it during the day!

My doctor asked me to start taking Melatonin because sleep is the key to creating a good seratonin balance in the brain. He thought that many of my migraines were caused by a lack of seratonin - caused by a lack of good sleep. (seratonin is replenished during the REM cycle I think) I took it for a while and started sleeping much better. The only problem was that eventually my body became used to the vitamin and I started having trouble sleeping again. It did help with my headaches.
