Lee,
Yes, people have been approved for Social Security disability benefits based on intractable Migraines. Whether you apply for SSI or SSDI depends on how long you've worked and paid into Social Security. See Disability Benefits - SSI and SSDI for more information. One of the most critical factors in being awarded benefits is having your doctors behind you on applying.
All of that said, if your doctor says there's nothing more to try, it IS definitely time for a new doctor. An acual Migraine specialist would be your best bet. Take a look at the article Migraine and Headache Specialists - What's So Special? If you need help finding a Migraine specialist, check our listing of Patient Recommended Migraine and Headache Specialists.
There are now over 100 medications and supplements that can be used for Migraine prevention. The frustration of trying to find what works for us can make it seem as if we've tried it all, but with so many possible preventives, it's literally impossible to have tried them all. See Migraine preventive medications - too many options to give up! for more information.
Sometimes, the best treatment for intractable Migraines that aren't responding to medications is IV infusion therapy to get the cycle broken. For more information, see IV Treatment of Refractory Migraine.
Hope this helps,
Teri
I have no idea if it's covered or not under Social Security disability. I too have migraines at least 4-5 a week sometimes daily. I have had migraines for years. But since my brain surgery the migraines are more frequent then before and more intense.
Blessings to you and the best of luck.

See http://www.ssa.gov/disability but here is what I understand "is covered"... If you have & are being treated for 1 or more conditions that are either expected to last at least 1 year or end in death that make it impossible for you to work GAINFULLY (about $800.00/month) you can apply. It is a hard road...using an attorney makes it a little easier.
My neuro gave up on me, too. My primary doc tried me on Lortab. 5mg 1-3 times a day knocks back the headache so I can endure it. Most meds make it worse & the Lortab does too if I overdo it...but the itching prevents me using more than this amount, anyway. I am going to try the Botox next & am looking in to an article named Treatment of Headache by Transcutaneous Electrical Stimulation. Good luck to you.
