Hi!

If you are 118lbs and you are 5'8, then your BMI is 17.9 - which is underweight. 82 BMI is very, very high meaning overweight, unless you ment 8.2?

If you are losing a lot of weight on Topamax, then your doctor should be monitering you, which it sounds like they are trying to do now, with having you watch your weight.

Can you drink protein shakes or something to try and keep weight on without it being unhealthy foods?

For being 5'8, if you have a medium bone structure, your weight should be somewhere around 140lbs. or so, give or take. I know because I'm 5'8 with medium bone structure. If I drop below 135 I look sick.

Please talk to your doctor about this, maybe he/she can change your medication to something else, or add another medication that will counter act the weight loss effect of the topamax.

How has the Topamax been working for your migraines? That's something to question too.

Good luck to you!

I have been on topa for a good 6 1/2 years. I am on 400 mg and have not lost 1 pound. Weight loss is a side affect of topamax. It has helped many with loosing weight and inches but there still are plenty of topa users that sure wish their turn would come around.

Who knows if it will happen to you. I had every other s/e that topa has and I mean I had them hot and heavy. I weighted oh that should be waited to see when it was going to happen to me. Finally I gave in and realized I am not one of the chosen ones.

Good luck to you though. You still have time.

I have been on Topamax for a year and lost 110lbs.  The way it worked for me is I became fuller quicker and a loss of appettite.  I took this opportunity to start eating healthy and the weight just fell off for me.  I've known a few others who were on Topamax and they said the same thing - they had to listen to their bodies and pay attention that they became full quickly.  If you ignore that, then it will not help you with weight loss, I think...
