Q: combining a triptan drug with a SSRI or SNRI drug,

Does do not combine a triptan with a SSRI or SNRI  mean at the same time or does it mean totally do not do it? I take Cymbalta daily and Zomig when I have a migraine, about 3-5 times a week.

Hi Evon,

Many Migraineurs safely take both. I do- in fact I take Celexa and Axert. Serotonin syndrome is very rare. There are only 27 cases reported of serotonin syndrome from 1998-2002. The FDA approved prescribing information does NOT say that they can't be taken together. It says to know the warning symptoms, take the medications with caution, and report any symptoms. You can read more in Antidepressants, Triptans, and Serotonin Syndrome. New information is coming out with much less dire warnings about these medications interactions.

There is one Migraine abortive medication that doesn't carry a warning for serotinin syndrome, Midrin. You can read more about it in our Midrin profile.

Does this help?

Thank you, Nancy.  It does help.  Sometimes I wish I was dead with the headache, but I don't want to kill myself. :) I have tried Midrin and it does not help me.  The best thing that I have found as a preventative is Inderal.  It makes them less severe, but does not prevent them.  I really appreciate you taking the time to answer my question.  It is a relief!!
