Q: I just don't know what to do anymore.

I've dealt with migraines since I was 13, but in 2007 I was in a car accident and was hit in the head at least three times, I was knocked unconscious and had a seziure, since then the migraines are so much worse.  I have episodes at least twice a month and now I feel the migraines "perking" at times through-out almost everday, small throbbing on the right side and now sometimes the left, the pain is just like that of my major migraines but comes and goes throughout the day, I never know if it's going to develop into a full migraine or not.  Another odd thing that happens is that my neck pops so much when I'm having a major migraines or minor ones.  Any idea why?  I have no insurance, doctors have put me on five different medications for migraines since the wreck and NOT ONE has helped even in the least bit, I might as well have taken sugar pills.  I can't spend $200 a month on topamax, tho I've heard good things about it.  I just don't know what to do anymore.  The only thing that has ever helped my migraines are prescription pain pills and those are not my idea of a preventive or long time medication that I want to be on.

Hi Licia,

Teri and I know how hard Migraine and chronic pain can be. At one point, Teri was in bed all day an average of five days a week with debilitating Migraines. She finally got angry enough to take charge of my health care and went to a Migraine specialist. Now, she often goes two to three MONTHS between Migraines. If you want to read more about her own battle against Migraine disease, take a look at Excerpt 2 - "Living Well With Migraine Disease and Headaches".

I am going to see a new doctor this June. So we truly understand how frustrating it is. Teri has health insurance. I am disabled now and am on medicaid. Not a great combination for "good" health care. But that is another story, you can actually read about in Are You Getting Substandard Migraine Care Too?

So having said all that I guess my point is to see a "true" Migraine specialist rather than a neurologist. Neurologists may be fine doctors, but treat so many different conditions like MS, stroke and epilepsy that it is difficult for them to be experts in one area. Migraine specialists treat one disease - ours -  Migraines and headaches. It's important to note that neurologists aren't necessarily Migraine and headache specialists. Take a look at the article Migraine and Headache Specialists - What's So Special? If you need help finding a Migraine specialist, check our listing of Patient Recommended Migraine and Headache Specialists

Don't give up, you will be amazed at the number of preventive medications that are used to treat Migraine disease. In fact there are over 100. If you add up the combinations of drugs the number goes up dramactically. Migraine Preventive Medications - Too Many Options To Give Up!

I hope this helps,

Nancy

Thank-you so much Nancy for all the great information.  I will definently start looking into all the different medication possibilities and see what I can do about seeing a migraine specialist, it would be so nice to see a doctor that might be able to help me.  I appreciate so much your answering my question and all the great info!

My mother is also on disablity and boy do they give her so much trouble with the medicaid, so I have alittle understanding what you mean.  Thank you so much again!
