Q: Aura after migraine?

Hi! My name is Jane, and I am a 31 year old female. I'm currently experiencing some fairly disconcerting symptoms, and I suspect that they are migraine related. I have had migraine headaches with aura since I've been a teenager. My migraines are typically triggered by weather changes and hormones. After my daughter was born two years ago, I started having headaches with increasing frequency. My doctor put me on Topomax, and it seems to help knock out all of my headaches except for those that are related to my menstrual cycle. Once a month, I usually get a completely debilitating migraine, and I haven't found a medication yet that will stop them.

A week ago, I had a terrible migraine and experienced some new symptoms. I was freezing cold (no fever), my ears were ringing loudly and I had near continuous flashes and blind spots in the peripheral vision of my left eye. The headache has since subsided, but the ear ringing and the visual issues continue. The "aura" is not continuous like it was during the headache, but it is still occurring frequently. I see bright flashes and large blind spots outlined in bright light in my left eye. It is always in the same location and in the same eye. This is unusual for me. I normally see flashes of light in my peripheral vision in both eyes prior to, and perhaps during, migraine headaches, but never lasting for a week after.

My doctor sent me to have a CT scan of my brain this afternoon, and said that I should have an eye exam as well. However, I can't help but believe that this has to be connected to migraine since the symptoms started with my typical headache.

So, my questions are: Does migraine aura sometimes hang around after the headache? If so, how long until it goes away? Is a week out of the "norm' for migraine aura? Does what I'm experiencing sound at all familiar to anyone? How can you treat aura without migraine? Is the ear ringing associated with aura too? Any advice is appreciated!

Hi janierie,

Migraine with aura occurs in approximately 25% of Migraineurs. Some symptoms of a Migraine can last for up to 48 hours. But all others should resolve themselves.  Your doctor is doing the right thing by having tests run to make sure everything is ok.  Please follow up with your doctor to rule out other vascular conditions.Continue reading More Evidence Links Migraine and Stroke Risk for information.

Good luck
